Basics of SEO

I made a video about the basics of SEO. It's more of basics for how web crawlers crawl your site and what they do with the info they collect.

Enjoy.

Overview of our SEO Video

I thought I would start at the beginning and talk through why SEO is important and why people may need it.

It starts with Search Engines crawling websites sending back information to their servers. When users want to find something, they enter in search terms. The search engines display what they have on hand via a Search Engine Results Page (SERP).

The better your site is optimized, the better chance you will be on the first-page search results. Even if you don't make it to the first page, you should know how your site is ranking, which pages are receiving traffic, and which words people are typing to find your website.

If you don't know, you may want to consider SEO and develop your website a little more.

We hope you enjoy the video.

SEO Basics Details

SEO falls into a higher-level marketing strategy that requires other marketing efforts to be developed. e.g., you need a website to be able to do SEO, unless you want to use SEO for social media efforts. That is a different ball of wax, with some very transferable tactics.

SEO is about creating quality content and relationships. The idea stems from the original intent of search engines, to help people find what they are looking for, and provide them quality results. Using this premise, we then look at the mechanics of SEO.

  1. Code - The code should be clean and error-free. People should be able to visit your website and get there in a reasonable time. They should be able to see what they need, and the site should work from the visitors' perspective.
  2. Content - The content should be relevant to the search term. If the content is misaligned, you will see a high bounce rate, low page on site, and other factors that indicate your content quality is poor. Also, check your landing pages and see if people are jumping off the page or moving further into your site.
  3.  Community - Your website should be an excellent online society, with relevant sites linking to your site. If you have quality content, people will link to it. Your links should make sense and add value to web users that click through your website and those connected to you.
  4. Competitors - You should know who your online competitors are and how they are marketing themselves. If you have a keyword list, you should know who is competing with your site. The website doesn't live in a vacuum.
  5. Good Web Design - Your website should be ready to receive traffic and get them to the correct part of the website. Have a solid call to action, straightforward navigation, and content pages that speak to your differing audiences at differing buying stages.

SEO basics are simple; the execution tends to get complicated, along with priorities.
